What the buyer wrote
As the Contracting Authority, the Department for Transport requires data to be collected regarding maritime traffic (including the volume, origin, destination and type of cargo) from port authorities, shipping lines and agents. The provision of data is mandatory under EC Maritime Statistics Directive (95/64/EC). The data is used in order to allow the UK Government to monitor and evaluate its policy on maritime and shipping, and is also provided to a Directorate of the European Commission (Eurostat) which exists to provide statistical information to the European Union.
