The UKATC has to deliver the MOONS cryo-vacuum system which requires 3-off cold-heads and 3-off compressors for which ESO has mandated the use of specific equipment from Leybold Oerlikon. MOONS is designed to operate at infra-red wavelengths and hence it uses detectors that are sensitive to infra-red light and are operated at cryogenic temperatures. This means that the detectors, and the environment around the detectors, must be cooled to 120K to limit the background radiation seen.
